Yesterday I received the 2009 shoot interview Rena's ex-hubby Marc Mero did for RF (available
here). Marc said some very interesting things about Rena most of us probably didn't know. Here are the highlights:
-When Marc worked for WCW he asked not to have Kim Page as his valet any longer because Rena's daughter Mariah, only 7 years old at the time, thought Marc would leave Rena for Kim everytime she saw them on TV together.
-How he met Rena: He was in Jacksonville, FL for a wrestling show, then went to a restaurant with his friends DDP & Buff Bagwell. They guys used to play a game: Whenever they see a pretty girl one guy could tell the other "Give her your best line." They then would laugh about it when the girl checks them out or whatever. The guys were standing in line when Rena and her friends walked in. Buff noticed Rena and said "OMG, look at that girl" and DDP then told Marc "Hey bro, give her your best line". Marc thought of what to do so he gave the cashier a note to give Rena which said "Do you like me? Yes or No? Circle one". At first Rena didn't react to it but later had the cashier return the note with a circled "Maybe" on it. (Marc then jokingly said: "Looking back now I should punsh DDP right in the face.")
-Marc was still engaged to someone else when he met Rena. (just like Brock) Once he split with his fiancee he & Rena married quickly.
-Rena's first husband Wayne Richardson used to be a wrestling fan and she watched it with him occacionally.
-During contract negotiation with WWF Marc made sure it had a clause stating he wouldn't travel anywhere without his wife Rena. Vince McMahon okay'd it but when Marc asked him to bring in Rena as his valet Vince wasn't sure if that's a good idea but told Marc they'll talk about it. When Vince actually saw Rena for the first time he said "Wow. We have to put her on TV".
-When Marc was out with an injured knee he sat at home watching Sable became a big star. He stated that he was very proud of her, and not jealous at all.
-Rena and Marc didn't interact much with people in the WWF lockerroom. They pretty much kept to themselves. Says he was very protected of her because he wanted his marriage to "survive" the wrestling business. Marc stated he "would have died for her". Guys played bad rips on Rena and it was heartbreaking for Marc to see.
-Marc trained Rena. Says she picked up very quick but couldn't take the bumps because she wasn't built for that. Credits Luna & Jacqueline for putting her over.
-Marc said Tammy "Sunny" Sytch bashes Rena because at the time Sunny was the topgirl and then they pushed Sable to the moon. Still he said he can somehow understand Sunny (umm.. seriously??). Says there was lots of tension between Rena and Tammy in the lockerroom and Tammy said very hurtful things to Rena while Rena never said anything rude to Tammy. Marc said the guys all knew about this and tried to stirr something up at times.
-Allowing Rena to do Playboy was one of the worst decisions in his life. Marc believes that this was the beginning of the downfall of their marriage.
-Doesn't really go into it but Marc mentions he took drugs (steroids; doesn't exactly say what) but he and Rena cleaned up their lifes when they got married. He said both made some "horrible mistakes".
-Says the Tag matches with Sable were lots of fun and received good crowd reaction because they always saved her for the big comebacks.
-Rena and Marc made the decision to leave WWF when Rena discovered feces in her bag when she returned from a tour in the UK. Marc said ALL the things that Rena claimed in her lawsuit vs WWF really happened.
-WCW only teased for Rena to start with them. They didn't seriously try to bring her in because they would've faced a lawsuit from WWF.
-Marc said he was stunned and completely shocked when Rena told him she called Vince to return to the WWE. However, he realized that was what she really wanted so he supported her.
-On the Rena/Vince affair rumor: Marc said he heard that too but doesn't know if true or not. Says only Rena knows what she did at that part of her life.
-Marc was backstage during Sable's 2nd WWE stint and Rena introduced him to both Brock and Vince.
-When they divorced they walked into court hand in hand and hugged when leaving. It was a very amicable split. Marc has nothing bad to say about Rena and is very happy for her.
